HELP and HECS repayments explained

Compulsory HELP repayments are based on repayment income and can make take-home pay lower than a basic tax-and-Medicare estimate.

Why our basic estimate excludes HELP

HELP calculations depend on your repayment income and current thresholds. Repayment income is not always the same as the salary entered into a calculator: reportable fringe benefits, net investment losses and some other items can matter.

What you may see on a payslip

If you tell an employer you have a study or training support loan, they can withhold additional amounts through PAYG. The exact final compulsory repayment is assessed against your circumstances, generally through the tax system.

Plan with an allowance

Use the take-home calculator as a baseline, then allow for HELP separately until you have confirmed your current repayment obligation. Check the ATO's compulsory repayment guidance for current thresholds and rules.
