US bonus tax calculator
Estimate common federal supplemental-wage withholding and employee FICA on a separately paid bonus.
This lets the calculator stop Social Security withholding once you reach the 2026 wage base. It assumes your bonus is separately identified and paid below $1 million.
Estimated bonus after federal withholding and FICA
$3,517.50
- Bonus
- $5,000.00
- Federal withholding (22%)
- −$1,100.00
- Social Security (6.2%)
- −$310.00
- Medicare (1.45%)
- −$72.50
State and local tax, additional Medicare tax, retirement deductions and benefits are not included. Withholding is not necessarily your final tax liability.
Why your bonus payslip can differ
Employers can use a flat federal supplemental-wage withholding rate when a bonus is separately identified. FICA still applies, although Social Security stops once annual wages reach its wage base. Your final income-tax bill is based on your full return, not this withholding estimate.
See IRS Publication 15 for 2026 supplemental-wage withholding and payroll-tax rules.
